Madeleine, dite Milou, et Simone déportées avec leur mère Yvonne parce que juives à Auschwitz et à Bergen-Belsen ; Denise, à Ravensbrück. Rapatriées en mai 1945, Milou et Simone apprennent à Denise, déjà rentrée, que leur mère est morte d'épuisement. De leur père, André, et de leur frère Jean, elles espèrent des nouvelles.
Déportés en Lituanie, ils ne reviendront jamais. Pour les sours Jacob, le retour est tragique. À la Libération, on fête les résistants, mais qui a envie d'écouter le récit des survivants ? Milou et Simone ne rencontrent qu'indifférence, incompréhension et gêne, alors elles se taisent. Mais, peu à peu, la vie reprend ses droits. Les jeunes femmes semblent heureuses quand, en 1952, Milou meurt dans un accident de voiture.
Denise et Simone restent les deux seules survivantes d'une famille décimée. Plus que jamais inséparables. Dans ce récit poignant, Dominique Missika éclaire la jeunesse des filles Jacob, toutes trois si belles et si vaillantes, et raconte ce qui a souvent été tu : la difficulté de certains déportés à trouver une place dans la France de l'après-guerre. À partir de ses souvenirs personnels et d'archives inédites, l'auteure, qui a été proche de Simone Veil devenue une icône républicaine, et de Denise Vernay, combattante inlassable de la mémoire de la Résistance et de la déportation, dévoile ici un pan intime et méconnu de l'histoire de ces sours admirables.
Dominique Missika est historienne. Elle a publié plusieurs ouvrages sur la France sous l'Occupation, dont L'Institutrice d'Izieu (Seuil, 2014).
