CUENTOS DE LIAO ZHAI fueron escritos a finales del siglo xvii. El título completo es Liao Zhai Zhi Yi, que podría traducirse como «Cuentos extraordinarios de tertulia», aunque son conocidos popularmente en China como Cuentos de Liao Zhai. Representan la culminación del relato fantástico chino como género literario. Siguiendo la larga tradición de la literatura fantástica en lengua culta, Pu Songling recrea un mundo de espectros, demonios, magos, animales sabios y espíritus reencarnados que conviven, en mayor o menor armonía, con el común de los mortales. Utilizando una gran variedad de elementos ­leyendas populares, obras literarias anteriores, sucesos históricos, experiencias personales­, el autor proporciona una nueva dimensión al cuento clásico al impregnar sus relatos de un marcado espíritu crítico. El sistema de exámenes imperiales, el funcionariado o las prácticas feudales son ingeniosamente denunciadas en estos relatos que combinan la narración y el comentario, y que inducen al lector a tomar lo fantástico por verdadero y el hecho real por inventado. Textos abiertos a la imaginación, cuyo final exige la reflexión o pone en juego los resortes capaces de provocar la sorpresa, los cuentos reflejan las creencias de una época marcada por el neoconfucionismo de Ching Zhu, la ascensión del budismo, el declive del taoísmo y el resquebrajamiento del sistema feudal. Esta edición de Cuentos de Liao Zhai recoge ciento cinco de los cuatrocientos setenta y cuatro que forman el original, a los que acompañan dos apéndices sobre el sistema de exámenes imperiales y la administración local, así como tres leyendas tradicionales chinas.

Cada capítulo proporciona una descripción rigurosa de lo principios físicos en que se basa la utilización de una determinada fuente de energía, un breve historia de su evolución, una descripción de los dispositivos necesarios para cosechar la energía, una estimación de las eficiencias de conversión que se pueden alcanzar con los mismos, una discusión de los efectos medioambientales derivados de su aprovechamiento, la posibilidad de su integración de las grandes redes de distribución de energía y un cálculo aproximado del coste de cada unidad energética producida, así como las perspectivas futuras en su desarrollo. Se ha intentado llevar a cabo una descripción simplificada pero rigurosa de los diversos temas con el fin de hacerlos accesibles a personas en formación y de que, además, permita a los profesionales en el campo de las energías renovables una primera consulta sobre cuestiones generales relacionadas con las diversas formas en que se puede transformar la energía.
